Excuses:
The first thing to note here is that is my first attempt at writing a feature length script. It had always been a dream of mine, and I was finally inspired to do it after visiting Botswana in 2015. It took me four years to finish, and I made many mistakes along the way. The length blew out, I completely re-wrote the 2nd Act on Version 6, and then I left the ‘Final’ stewing for a year before sending it to a screenplay review service for feedback and further edits. By the end of 2019, I had to let it go. But I appreciated the experience, and it motivated me to fail upwards.
Reflecting on ‘The Ivory Herd’ in 2024, I can see what’s wrong with it - beyond cliche’s and pacing issues. I now have a better understanding of concepts like cultural literacy, and can’t help but feel overall the story is just a more light-hearted version of ‘Blood Diamond’. I wouldn’t write a story like this again, it was really just a test to see if I could commit to, and finish writing a film script, and was always intended as my love letter to Africa.
